UGH
And I can’t decide b/w these 3 lenses…I’m selling my Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 to Amanda for her new 40D she’s getting because she doesn’t need a wide-angle (she shoots mostly portraiture) but I DO…so I’m torn between these 3 lenses (since I’ll be using the $$$ to get another lens)
1. Tokina 16-50mm f/2.8
2. Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8
3. Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8
The differences are driving me crazy.
Price…Tokina is almost $700…which is A LOT…Tamron is about $420 (lol) and Sigma about $390…obviously price-wise Sigma wins, barely.
Wideness (this lens will prevent me from having to buy an ultrawide…unless I magically get rich or something)…Tokina wins by being a smidge wider than the rest, though on an APS-C sensor (I have a 40D) you need every mm you can get. Especially considering the fact that I LOVE shooting wide and getting in close.
Quality…I’ve only used the Sigma and it’s aight…online reviews RAVE about the Tamron. Tokina has meh center sharpness and blah corners (who cares…if you want your corner to be sharp and the main focus then why is it so far towards the edge of the frame? Do you want your viewers eyes to drift away? Sorry…random fine art photo moment). So for this it’s a tie…ish…going by what I know and what I’ve read, Tamron wins
Macro…Sigma wins with a “whooping” 1:3 macro capabilitiy…w/e…Tamron is a close second and Tokina close behind…this really isn’t a factor in my decision but it’s nice to take pretty pictures of Rudy’s eyeball or a flower sometimes
Focusing…I know Sigma is highpitched and fast, faster than my Tamron…my Tamron 28-75 is great, yeah not USM but w/e…idk about Tokina, but it looks fancy
CA…Tamron wins, Sigma and Tokina have horrible CA which I am a stickler for. I just hate seeing purple fringing in tree branches.
I’m thinking the Tamron might get my vote…idk yet, but maybe. I really want a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, but it’s so expensive and I wouldn’t use it much for what I make money from (shooting pretty people) but it’ll help what I love shooting (performing people)
Sigh
